
A few months ago, I had a conversation with my phone’s AI assistant about rescheduling a doctor’s appointment. Standard stuff. Then I started thinking about where exactly that conversation went.

What “On-Device AI” Actually Means
Most people assume their phone’s AI is running on the phone. A lot of it isn’t.

The flip side — cloud AI — sends your voice, text, photos, or whatever you’re working with to a remote server for processing, then sends the result back. It’s faster and more powerful, but your data travels.
Most Android phones use a hybrid approach by default. Some tasks run on the phone’s chip. Others — especially anything visually or linguistically complex — go to the cloud. For Samsung Galaxy Users (One UI 6.0+)
Step 1: Check Your Device Is Eligible
Galaxy AI is available on the Galaxy S26 Ultra, S26+, S26, S25 series, S24 series, Z Fold7, Z Fold6, Z Flip7, Z Flip6, and many other models. Older Galaxy S21–S23 series and Z Fold3–Fold5/Flip3–Flip5 will require a software update to access Galaxy AI features. Nextplatform

You need One UI 6.0 or later. If you’re behind, update first: Settings → Software update → Download and install.
Step 2: Find the Galaxy AI Master Switch
This is the single most important setting in this entire guide.

Step 3: Understand What Still Works

Step 4: Know What You’re Trading Off

The Honest Limitation

That’s a real constraint. If you’re trying to summarize a 20-page PDF on your Pixel, you’ll hit a wall. For shorter tasks — summarizing a news article, drafting a quick reply, proofreading a text — it handles things well.

Here’s the practical breakdown I landed on after testing both modes:
